Kelly Hughes Named New Principal of Richard E. Byrd Elementary

Big changes are on the horizon at Richard E. Byrd Elementary School. At the June 23 Glen Rock Board of Education meeting, the district officially appointed Ms. Kelly Hughes as the school’s new principal. A longtime educator with a rich background in elementary instruction and leadership, Hughes is bringing more than 15 years of experience—and a whole lot of heart—to her new role.

Ms. Hughes joins Glen Rock from the Westwood Regional School District, where she’s spent the past three years as an elementary principal. Her career spans everything from classroom teaching to curriculum development, with a strong focus on literacy, inclusion, and creating student-centered school cultures.

“I’m honored to contribute to a district with a long-standing reputation for excellence, collaboration, and a deep commitment to student success,” Hughes said. “Glen Rock is a place where families, staff, and leaders support the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.”

From morning greetings to leading professional development and community events, Hughes is all about visibility and connection. She describes her leadership style as transparent, approachable, and deeply student-focused. Her top priorities include getting to know every student and family, supporting staff through growth-focused leadership, and helping maintain the welcoming, close-knit culture that makes Byrd a standout.

Throughout her career, Hughes has prioritized building trust and open communication across school communities. “I believe strong leadership starts with clear communication and active listening,” she explained. “When people feel informed and included, they’re more empowered to collaborate and lead alongside me.”

Originally inspired by her own childhood teachers—especially a standout third grade teacher named Mrs. Poiani—Hughes knew early on that she wanted to work with children. After beginning as a second and third grade teacher, she gradually took on leadership roles that allowed her to expand her impact.

Her credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Towson University, a Master’s in Literacy from William Paterson University, and certifications in supervision and principalship through NJEXCEL. Outside the school day, she’s a dog mom to a German Shepherd named Riggs, a beach-lover, and an avid reader.

Hughes is already looking forward to becoming part of Byrd’s daily rhythm—and to learning everything she can about the students, staff, and families who make the school community so special.

“Byrd is a place where students are encouraged to take risks, celebrate their individuality, and grow both academically and emotionally,” she said. “That’s exactly the kind of environment I believe in. Let’s continue to live the message that defines Byrd School: Be Brave. Be Bold. Be Beautiful. Be Byrd.”
