Superintendent Evaluation Meeting Brings Tension and Transparency in Glen Rock

The Glen Rock Board of Education’s public evaluation of Superintendent Dr. Brett Charleston turned into a sobering moment of reflection and frustration.

On 7.1.2025, Dr. Charleston exercised his right to have the review conducted publicly, but provided no written self-evaluation, no district goals, and no supporting documents. “To open a blank evaluation felt like being shut out,” one trustee said. The board gave an overall rating of proficient, highlighting strengths in operations and curriculum, but flagged serious concerns about communication, collaboration, and mutual respect.

Board members described condescending tone, lack of transparency, and moments of disrespect. Community commenters echoed these sentiments. Longtime district observer Colleen Manley said, “We have so many opportunities and wonderful staff... this isn’t productive. I’m shocked [Dr. Charleston] would be part of creating an environment like this.”

It also didn’t go unnoticed that during the meeting, Charleston appeared to spend much of the session looking down at his phone without making eye contact. He then left entirely before public comments began.
